Abstract :
A compact metamaterial-inspired circular monopole antenna is proposed for wideband operation. In [1], a rectangular monopole antenna with metamaterial loading has been proposed, which provides a conceptual route for implementing small resonant antennas. In this paper, a circular - shaped monopole is implemented based on the design in [1]. The new antenna provides wider bandwidth, better radiation efficiency and better tunability. The proposed antenna can achieve 220MHz bandwidth covering the 2.3GHz band. A fabricated prototype has compact dimensions of 32mm×30mm×1.59mm. The simulated radiation efficiency is 83% and the measured efficiency is 73%.
