Abstract :
Since transportation is such an essential component of present-day society, capable of producing significant benefits, yet giving rise to many negative externalities, appropriate policies need to be devised to maximize the benefits and minimize the inconveniences. At the same time the allocation, design and construction of such transport infrastructure and services must be subject to careful planning, both by public and private agencies. The quantity of parking provided and the way in which parking is managed are fundamental determinants of the character of any city. Parking supply affects urban form, such as the intensity of development and pedestrian friendliness; transportation characteristics; and municipal finances. For these reasons, there is a close relationship between parking policies and the success of sustainable development. Parking has a significant impact on development costs and is prohibitively expensive in many markets. This study is proposed to investigate the role of balancing parking spaces with motorized travel demand in sustainable development context. Data will be obtained through questionnaire and analyzed to draw some recommendations and conclusions that could be used by transportation engineers, urban planners and policy makers to sustain the development of Malaysia.
