Developing distance learning into online learning at undergraduate degree program level

Abstract :
The Bachelor of Construction Management (Building) programme in the Department of Building, at the University of Newcastle, is recognised by professional institutions in relevant disciplines as a leading edge programme in Australia, and worldwide. It uses an innovative integrated problem-based learning approach combining curriculum study areas in: ethics and principles, communication and computing, building technology, construction economics and quantity surveying, and management. The programme is delivered in on-campus, distance learning and offshore modes. It has a strongly espoused student-centred philosophy and is fully documented for distance learning. This provided a foundation for the implementation of online learning at programme level. A transitional strategy has been developed to make online learning a mainstream delivery mechanism. This paper provides a background to the problem based learning philosophy underpinning the program, and describes delivery and assessment methods used since the programme began in 1991. It then reflects on a range of development and management issues, relating to moving online, including: performance criteria for platform choice, resourcing, training and support, staff acceptance and usage, and student acceptance and usage. Evaluation of the situation during the transition has been informed by feedback collected from academic staff and students.
