Abstract :
As the scale of information processing is increasing, from Petabyes of Internet data to the projected Exabytes in networked storage at the end of this decade, novel network solutions are required to support the Future Internet with its new emerging applications such as UHD IPTV, 3D gaming, virtual worlds etc. These high-performance applications require very high network capacities and need to be supported on an on-demand basis sharing a pool of specific IT resources that can be provisioned in an automated manner with minimal service provider intervention. Cloud Computing supporting a variety of elastic and reliable services has emerged as the suitable model to support these requirements involving the applications services as well as the IT hardware and software required to provide these services. When considering the Cloud Computing model it is clear that interconnection of the relevant IT resources and therefore the associated network infrastructure is of critical importance in the end-to-end service delivery. At the same time, optical networking is offering a very high capacity, scalable transport with increased dynamicity, flexibility and resilience through recent technology advancements including dynamic control planes, virtualization technologies etc. In addition, features such as inherent energy and space efficiency provided by optical networks makes them a suitable candidate in support of the Future Internet. This workshop will address the integration and orchestration challenges of optical network and IT resources in a common infrastructure in order to be shared among services and support a variety of new business models and opportunities for both the IT service and optical networking sectors. Relevant views will be presented by representatives of the research and industry community involving telecom operators and equipment vendors. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion. The workshop is jointly organized by the EU projects GEYSERS and MAIN- - S.
