Abstract :
Scalar wave solutions launched from sources with cylindrical symmetry and possessing a high degree of spatial and temporal localization are studied. Using the characteristic variables, (z-ct, z+ct), and a cylindrically symmetric form of the Green function, we explore solutions having an extended near field. Such solutions have potential for use in a wide variety of applications in such areas as acoustic imaging, underwater range finding and secure communication
