A survey of low-rate digital image coding techniques

Image data compression, with a history of development over forty years long and international standards recently established, can now certainly be considered to be a mature technology. It is thus timely to pause and consider the progress made to date, to see what present algorithms have to offer, and also to conjecture what the future might hold
