In spite that service sector is exceeding manufacturing sector and has become a dominant power in economic development, research about supply chain management still focuses on manufacturing sector rather service sector, thus the immature research of service supply chain will be unfavorable to the development of service economy. To address this deficiency, this article constructs a framework for service supply chain, compared with manufacturing supply chain. A definition of service supply chain is suggested after literature review and an introduction to three typical kinds of service supply chain, and then its operation process is discussed. By exploring the relationship between consumers´ need and consumers´ living condition, this research demonstrates their need for service is closely related to their non-residential living condition, which mainly determines the nature of service. Based on above definition and characteristics of service products in contrast to tangible products, the nature of service supply chain is characterized. Finally the principles of efficiency assessment of service supply chain are discussed for researchers and practitioners.
