Abstract :
Radio frequency identification (RF/ID) is a relatively new technology, but is finding many applications within the transportation industry, Recognition of the technology flexibility has been recognized by a number of organizations through the establishment of standards. Those organizations include: American Trucking Associations (ATA), Association of American Railroads (AAR), International Standards Organization (ISO), American National Standards Institute (ANSII), International Airline Travel Association (IATA). Each organization has developed data content specifications, equipment placement, and environmental requirements, as well as a number of other requirements for the RF/ID systems. The organizations have worked closely together to ensure that organizational requirements did not create conflicts between their specifications. As a result, equipment designed to read trucks within the trucking industry can be used to read rail cars within the rail industry
