Abstract
The 12.7 mm height type has become the industry standard for optical disc drives mounted in notebook PCs. The actuator built into the optical pickup, which is a key component of these optical drives, has also become thinner and smaller. Furthermore, it is required to perform highly responsive behavior to meet the market need for ever higher disc speed factors. The higher density of optical discs has resulted in a reduction of the actuator´s tilt margin. Thus the introduction of tilt adjustment has recently become essential to secure stable recording and playback. Existing thin actuators, however, do not have enough sensitivity to meet the high disc speed factor trend or are too large to be mounted in thin drives. In this paper, a high response actuator with a tilt function for 12.7 mm height drives is presented.
