Abstract
This paper examines the problem of synthesising all-optical microwave frequency filters. Previously suggested techniques are reviewed, and their limitations considered. A new approach to the synthesis problem is suggested, employing a genetic algorithm to generate filter structures. The theory behind genetic algorithms is described, along with a representation of the filter synthesis problem suitable for treatment by the genetic algorithm. The problems of finite impulse response (FIR) and infinite impulse response (IIR) filter synthesis are both tackled, and the resulting structures presented. The applicability of the genetic algorithm to the problem is assessed
