Abstract :
The EWSXpress core node described in this paper is a new generation ATM switch architecture. The flexibility due to the independent scaleability of the switch fabric and the processing power for the switch control makes this architecture suitable for the full range of broadband systems, from small size access nodes to large switches and cross-connects in the core network. The modularity with respect to the support of various services allows to provide optimized solutions for all broadband services including data and video as well as multi-media. The integrated support for narrowband interworking makes the EWSXpress system also applicable as ATM backbone node for the narrowband network. In this paper, first the general architecture of the EWSXpress core node is introduced and some of the main sub systems are presented in more detail. In the second part, its application in a narrowband trunking scenario is discussed
