Abstract :
This paper presents a personal computer based method of measuring beer haze in the laboratory to improve the quality of the beer. The presence of colloidal particles in the beer even after filtering like proteins and yeast affects the level of beer clarity, or more appropriately the lack thereof (haze), which has to be avoided or reduced to the accepted level prescribed by the International Standards. When incident light falls on the liquid, it exhibits transmission and scattering of light. The amount of transmitted light and scattered light at a 90-degree angle to the axis of the incident light are converted to voltage using photo diode detectors and operational amplifiers. The voltages are converted into digital form using ADC and processed using the personal computer to determine the beer haze. The personal computer is used to control operations, process data and to maintain data base.
