Abstract
In this paper, we propose a position based algorithm for maintaining the topology of a mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) with the capability to endure the loss of a signal for a given period. The basic principle behind the algorithm is to elect a centrally placed co-ordinator and entrust it with the responsibility to maintain the network neighbourhood topology, thereby eliminating the need for routing. The coordinator transmits its current position and its velocity during each interval to all the nodes in the network. The nodes now individually decide their movement so as to converge within a specified distance from the coordinator at the end of the interval. The algorithm allows movement of the nodes in any direction and maintains the topology in spite of limited transmission failures. The algorithm has been simulated in a number of synthetically designed situations and the results obtained show that the network topology is maintained under all circumstances.
