Abstract :
In the present experiments, a Nd3+:YVO4 diode-pumped laser below threshold is subjected to an asymmetric change of its excitation conditions, via a triangular time-periodic modulation of its pump parameter such that the average value of the pump is close to, but always below threshold. The asymmetry of the modulation has a dramatic influence on the system response: a slow up-rising sawtooth does trigger laser pulse emission, while a fast up-rising one does not.
