Abstract
The paper considers the system operational problems posed by variable wind generation. It is proposed to exploit the inherent storage of electric heating load to mitigate the mismatch between wind generation and heat load demand. The commercial and communication framework required by this mode of operation is discussed. The approach will be illustrated by data taken from the Irish electricity supply system, where wind energy is currently supplying almost 10% of demand.
