Abstract :
The authors describe a knowledge-based system developed to interpret minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) data from a microbiology instrument. The system is implemented as a subtask of the instrument´s software, which operates on an IBM-compatible PC. Some background information about the domain of MIC data interpretation and the major players in this arena is discussed. The rationale for using a knowledge-based system approach is presented and the implementation approach and other pertinent details are included. A few remarks about the system´s current status, future plans for it, and lessons learned from its development are also given
