Abstract :
This paper introduces a new reactive power compensator utilizing a four switches PWM AC converter. The reactive power control is performed by switching a three phase reactor with the PWM AC controller, both in parallel with a capacitor bank. The advantages to be gained include sinusoidal input-output current/voltage waveforms and high switching frequency, therefore better transient response and substantially smaller input filter. The paper analyzes the conversion characteristic and the harmonic generation. A design procedure including the input filter is proposed and the theoretical results are verified experimentally on a 30 kVA prototype
