  • Abstract
The latest generation of digital computer-based control systems has enabled basic SCADA functions to be complemented by extensive data processing and graphic display facilities. The more advanced control systems also include energy management systems (EMS) to optimise power network operation and power system application (PSA) software to improve network security. The authors discuss some applications using hard-wired logic which have not been fully exploited on computer-based systems. Other application functions have taken advantage of digital computer processing and a number of these, which do not fall under commonly met EMS or PSA functions, are also described. The unusual functions have been specially developed to suit particular power network requirements and interface with basic SCADA functions. The authors also describe the basic functions of these applications and outline the principal features of the hardware and software to implement the functions. Experience gained from the operation of the applications is also described
