Abstract :
The purpose of this paper is to examine the state of software developments and technology in the intelligent transportation system (ITS) and vehicle navigation market. Topics include: route guidance, user safety, in-vehicle ergonomics issues, voice interaction and technical requirements for a real in-vehicle navigation system. The success of the current push of ITS related traveller technologies is wholly dependent on the ability of these companies to incorporate and market highly intelligent, intuitive, easy to use software applications. The software must accommodate an array of technologies and deliver customer satisfying solutions. Liikkuva´s goal in ITS program development is to offer flexible, open system software products that integrate these different technologies. Currently, Liikkuva´s vehicle navigation software programs comprise elements of the following technologies: Global Positioning System or GPS, route guidance, points of interest information, map/roadway network information, voice interaction, graphical user interfaces and wireless communications including RBDS integration
