Abstract
South Africa is in a situation where expansion of its energy resources is required. A large emphasis has been placed on renewable energy in the future plans including wind energy. In this paper a laboratory-based wind energy system has been developed and implemented. A flexible test rig was constructed to allow testing of different sized Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines under a range of conditions. Experiments with unbalanced grid voltages were conducted on the setup and the results are presented.
