This study investigated how different dimensions of social capital influenced employee creativity and when the effects were stronger with a heterogeneous sample of teams in the PRC. Considering knowledge as the foundation of employee creativity, we integrated the mediating role of knowledge sharing and the moderating role of knowledge characteristics in the relationship between social capital and employee creativity. The results demonstrated that (1) knowledge sharing mediated the relationship between social capital and employee creativity, but different dimensions of social capital exerted dissimilar effects on employee creativity via influencing knowledge sharing. (2) knowledge tacitness moderated the relationship between one dimension of social capital (shared vision) and employee creativity, but not the relationship between other dimensions (relation strength and trust) and employee creativity. Implications of these results were discussed.
