Abstract :
This paper proposes a new approach on a compression algorithm for encoding Thai words. The use of 13-bit binary codewords provides a new coding compatible with ISO/IEC 18004 in a similar fashion as Shift JIS. In addition, the new coding can be used as an extension of TIS620 in order to maintain interoperability with an existing Thai industrial standard. In our approach, the words are extracted by our words separation program to a basic unit of word components. Four domains of Thai words often found in a daily-life are statistically chosen here: news, product names, person names and addresses. The result shows that the use of 13 bit-codewords to represent these chosen words enables space saving of more than 20%.
