Abstract
An experimental installation for the investigation of the cathode surface in vacuum arcs with a laser monitor is described. This method allows immediate observation of the cathode surface through the layer of luminous plasma. The time resolution of this technique may be less than 50 ns, the space resolution may be less than 20 μm
