Abstract
This paper presents the comparison of differential equation (DE) based algorithm and multi-variable series least squares (MVS-LSQ) based algorithm used for location of fault on transmission lines. A single pi section model of transmission line has been used to generate the samples of voltage and current at relay location. These samples have been utilized in the said algorithms to locate the fault i.e. to find the resistance (R) and inductance (L) between relay location and fault point. Samples of voltage and current were obtained using simulation in PSCAD. Programs have been developed in MATLAB, for obtaining the value of R and L using DE based algorithm and MVS-LSQ based algorithm.
