  • Abstract
The development of an industry-owned and -managed global aeronautical satellite system (known as AvSat) to meet the expanding communications needs of the airline industry well into the next century is described is described. The three major subsystems of AvSat-ground segment, avionics and cabin systems, and space segment-are presented. The AvSat system provides on a global basis, an integrated communications transport system for air traffic control, aeronautical operational control, aeronautical administrative communications, and airline passenger communications
