The authors discuss the results of an analysis undertaken to determine limit states, design wind loads and temperature effects for EHV transmission lines for the South African Electrical Power Authority, Eskom, and presents a framework for extending this approach to safety and security loads. This approach is based on reliability principles, taking into account the likely combination of different loads
