Abstract
This paper describes an aesthetic evolutionary design system, which explores the potential ability of designing tiling patterns. We investigate the use of Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) in our system, with the goal of enhancing user´s creativity to generate innovative tiling patterns. We focus mainly on two crucial aspects of the system. First, a staged L-systems representation is proposed to investigate more grammars in generating tiling patterns. Second, an aesthetic measurement based on fractal compression is applied to our EA, in order to automate the evolutionary design process. We describe our algorithm in detail and the methodology we have adopted in the system. Our experimental results have shown that our newly developed system is effective and has great potentials in evolving novel tiling patterns.
