Abstract :
Fractional frequency transmission system (FFTS) is new way of transmitting bulk power with reduction in transmission losses for very long distance (>400km). It also improves stability compared to extra high voltage AC (EHVAC) system. FFTS is very useful in transmitting power from renewable sources over very long distance. Experimental setup of FFTS with two-stage conversion method instead of cycloconverter has been proposed and frequency changer circuit has been designed and implemented. The proposed scheme helps in controlling frequency by implementing two-stage (AC-DC-AC) conversion method using power electronic switches. It can be effectively used to increase stability limit with increasing efficiency of the system maintaining total harmonic distortion (THD) within limit.
