Abstract :
Summary form only given. The purpose of this contribution is to describe personal experiences of a researcher whose work has been supported by ONR and to point out numerous similarities between emerging terrestrial power systems and power systems on Navy ships. This presentation argue that there exits a natural synergy between utility and ship power systems, and that the ongoing coordination between research organizations that support fundamental research in the civilian sector (NSF) and in the Navy (ONR) has a potential to significantly improve long-term prospects of power system engineering. As examples, we describe some recent developments in the electric power network efficiency and security (EPNES) projects that well illustrate the point, and provide a prototype for future synergistic endeavors between the two agencies.
