Abstract :
The work described was carried out within the context of the RACE Mobile project. A very important aspect of the system design is the efficiency with which the basic resource of radio spectrum is used and the integrity of the air interface. The paper compared the performance in computer simulations of 4-QAM and GMSK modulation schemes using a near maximum likelihood detector (reduced state Viterbi type) to perform channel equalisation. Extensive simulations have been carried out and results are presented for the COST 207 typical urban channel used at 1.8 GHz, and for the rural area channel
