Abstract
This paper describes the 10 Mbps phone line home networking IC that allows consumer electronic devices such as audio players, personal computers and IP telephones to be easily and cost effectively networked in a typical home environment using the existing household phone line wires and RJ-11 phonejacks. The IC implements an industry specification developed to allow concurrent network usage with normal analog phone service and asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) on the same pair of wires. Additionally, the IC divides the different types of traffic (voice, audio, video, Internet) into different classes of service so that important or time sensitive traffic can be given a quality of service (QoS) guarantee. The challenges associated with varieties of unstructured household phone wiring are described and how they are overcome with the application of equalization techniques.
