Abstract
There are two audio decoding formats defined by the DVD-Audio specification 1.0. These formats are uncompressed LPCM and compressed PPCM (packed PCM). Meridien Lossless Packing (MLP) has been adopted by the DVD consortium as the standard PPCM compressed format. All DVD-Audio players must support this format. Consumer electronic manufacturers are designing and developing both DVD-Audio players as well as combined DVD-Video/DVD-Audio players (also called Universal players). This paper provides an overview of a DVD-Audio implementation (including MLP), added system features, and design tradeoffs for a Universal DVD player.
