Abstract :
This paper introduces the modified multiband excitation model (MMBE) for speech coding. The MMBE is a modified version of the multiband excitation model which operates at lower bit rates and has improved speech quality. The MMBE is similar to the improved multiband excitation coder described in Hardwick and Lim (1991). The MMBE bit rate is reduced by employing more efficient coding techniques and reducing the number of voiced/unvoiced decisions per frame of speech than the original MBE. The complexity of the MMBE has been kept to a minimum in order to be suitable for real time applications with DSP chips. Preliminary results show the MMBE to meet or exceed the duality of previous MBE models at bit rates of 4.8 kbps and below
