Abstract
Cryogenic cooling options for high temperature superconducting (HTS) synchronous machines are outlined. Present electric machines use multiple Gifford-McMahon (GM) cryocoolers coupled to the cold HTS field winding via convective flow of single-phase, cold helium gas or two-phase neon. Pulse tube cryocoolers are an attractive future option due to their potential high reliability. Major performance issues include reliability, efficiency and cost
