Abstract :
Wavelet packets as the adaptive version of wavelets have been proved to be a powerful tool for analyzing transients with extended multiresolution. In this paper, we compare the results obtained by short time Fourier transform with wavelet transform for a set of vibration signal in condition monitoring of electrical equipment. Wavelet packets adapt to nature of transient signals through the best basis algorithm and provide transient representation in a small number of coefficients. In this way, wavelet packets offer an advantage over Fourier transform for analyzing transients.
