Rather than try to make precise forecasts, the author attempts a brief review of what has been and what is, with a few extrapolations into what is to come. The following aspects are considered: developments to date; developments in the UK and the rest of Europe, the USA and Japan; towards a third generation; scenarios for change; and managing the transition to third generation systems
