Abstract
Over the recent past, much of the work is done on how to support IP and other internetwork traffic generated within LANs over an ATM network. Existing solutions varies from reserving fixed amount of bandwidth permanently to achieving connection purely on demand. But, most of these solutions are either not suitable or intended to bring ATM to the desktop to support service quality dependent traffic. What is desirable to have is an integrated mechanism which would support existing applications and future BISDN applications at their desired quality level. An attempt in this direction is made by Varada and Sankar (see IEEE Southeastcon ´95 ) and this work carries it one step further in that direction. We initially assess existing solutions´ scope and limitations followed by the proposed integrated mechanism
