Abstract :
This article analyses and discusses the prospective role of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under Kyoto Protocol in advancement of renewables. Use of renewables for electricity generation results in less greenhouse gas emissions compared with fossil fuel energy systems and often offers additional synergistic benefits. Despite the large potential for development of renewable energy sources in developing Asian nations, currently their contribution to electricity generation remains insignificant. A number of barriers are identified that impede the implementation of the CDM mechanism. Incorporation of objectives for CDM in the national renewable energy strategy to tie in with each nation´s CDM strategy should assist in advancement of renewables.
