Abstract :
Removal of trace element, mercury, from gas stream using a wire-plate electrostatic precipitator has been investigated under pulse voltage application. Realizing the measurement problems with the mercury detector (Jerome 431-X) under the influence of charged air, the atomic absorption spectrometry technique was chosen to analyze mercury concentrations in the air flow. Samples were collected from both upstream and downstream of ESP using special sampling tube which has irreversible affinity for mercury (OSHA-140 method). The actual mercury concentration was measured using cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometer. Collection efficiency of ESP depended on the pulse voltage, pulse frequency and the initial concentration of mercury in the gas flow. As a function of concentration efficiency was higher at higher concentration of mercury; however, as a function of frequency the efficiency had a maximum around 150 Hz
