Abstract
Shows how a novel technique for modelling asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks at the burst level has application in particular areas of network design and planning. The emphasis is to show how burst level simulation can be used to address the new problems associated with designing high bandwidth, multiservice ATM networks. The burst level modelling approach can be used to measure the network performance parameters: delay and cell loss ratio (CLR). These measurements, including cell rate capacity use, are needed in traffic engineering, performance evaluation. The burst level concept is introduced, describing the type of traffic model that can be used, and the queue operation. Some of the traffic engineering problems associated with ATM network design and planning, and how the burst level technique is applied are also discussed
