Abstract
A fractal-based traffic source is proposed, as an accurate model for the the `bursty´, low bit-rate traffic produced by a typical VBR video coding scheme. The model is based on a switched-fractal algorithm, which switches between five constant-activity, fractal-based, cell generation modes, in a normally-distributed manner, in an attempt to reproduce the low-level, cell-generation process. The accuracy of this model (which has been verified by comparing the traffic produced by this source with `real´ traffic, produced through the simulated compression of two test images), combined with its simple implementation, makes it an ideal source model for highly compressed, variable bit-rate packet video
