Abstract :
The component tasks which are performed by the electronic control system in an electric-motor-driven total artificial heart or heart assist device are described. Means of adapting the tasks to the capabilities of compact microprocessor systems are discussed. Failsafe mechanisms and results of usage of an early implementation of the controller in animal experiments are outlined as well as considerations for the selection of hardware for a miniaturized version of the system
