Abstract :
As a result of work on digital television being conducted under contract to the Independent Television Commission (ITC), National Transcommunications Ltd., (NTL) has been able to demonstrate that it is technically feasible to transmit digital television in UHF channels which are at present unused. This is made possible by the marriage of two techniques, both of which make extensive use of digital signal processing. The first of these is the use of picture coding algorithms, which allow very high quality pictures to be reproduced for transmission at bit rates as low as 12 Mbit/second. The second, which the paper is concerned with, is orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), which as well as being a very robust means of transmitting data, also has excellent interference rejection properties
