  • Abstract
The maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) represents the optimum detection process. It is effectively realizable by the Viterbi algorithm (VA). Suboptimum sequential detection algorithms (SDA) observe only a limited number of paths, which results in a complexity reduction but also to a degradation against the VA. Adaptive receiver structures including three different SDA are presented: the M-algorithm, stack algorithm and the generalised stack algorithm. All three are sorting algorithms
