  • Abstract
Summary form only given. Project TedibeAr is a scientific experimental study to demonstrate the feasibility of dynamically controlling and accelerating an intense ion ring. The ion pulse from a magnetically insulated ion diode is injected through a full-cusp magnetic field into an axial guide field. The coils for this magnetic field are located internal to the vacuum chamber, so the field as a function of time can be dynamically altered. The Marx driver for the ion diode has a maximum open circuit voltage of /spl sim/1 MV. Beams with energies of about 300-400 kV have been studied. The source for the axial, guide magnetic field is a capacitor bank with about 4 mF. This subsystem stores /spl sim/1 MJ at 22 kV and delivers its current through 32, 3.6 m YK-198 coaxial cables to the magnet coils. The guide field is about 12-14 kgauss to control an ion ring with a maximum diameter of /spl sim/20 cm. Present experiments are measuring the performance of the ion diode and the conversion of the ion beam into a ring through the cusp magnetic field.
