Criteria for the design of PWM inverters with GTOs

Conditions for the application of GTOs in PWM inverters are examined. This paper includes a new gating circuit for high power GTOs. The circuit works with high frequency switchmode power supply for energy as well as information transfer. Results from tests are given, demonstrating that a safe operation and a high efficiency can be achieved. Also some networks for switching stress reduction are shown under regard of short circuit protection. Measurements from a built up 100 KVA GTO PWM inverter utilizing an improved snubber configuration are presented.
