Abstract :
In the decade since the WELL came online in 1985, it´s become one of the best known computer conferencing systems, noted for a rich conversational environment. An emphasis on accountability and continuity has given the regular participants the opportunity to build a strong sense of community, which influences the quality of interaction for newcomers, as well. Just as a government that empowers its citizens to speak out must accept both helpful and specious criticism from those citizens, a community system that wants to enhance community connection will find much of value in the unfettered suggestions, rejoicing and laments of the community as it tries to improve itself. Among the current population of almost 10,000 users are perhaps a hundred who consistently put time and care into articulating suggestions, complaints and policy debates. The following is a selection from a public discussion on the WELL initiated specifically to address the question of the community interest in a community networking business
