Abstract :
A study is made of the impact of transmission link and switch failures on blocking levels in both long-distance and metropolitan networks. An analytic model is derived to provide an upper bound on the blocking in a failure as a function of the loss of trunking capacity. Extensive simulation studies have been used to validate the model. A process for designing survivable networks is outlined
