Abstract :
Summary form only given. The acceleration of particles to high energies has received a great deal of interest due to its diverse applications in the field of nuclear physics and fusion science. The plasma based acceleration schemes include the plasma beat wave accelerator (PBWA), v/sub p//spl times/B accelerator and plasma wakefield accelerator (PWFA). For the wakefield excitation, the high intensity short pulse lasers have been successfully employed and appreciable energy gradients for electrons and protons have been achieved.
