Abstract :
Enormous research interest have been expressed in merging ATM and wireless networks supporting multimedia applications. Research prototyping is currently underway at many leading research and academic institutions. Various architectures have been proposed depending on the intended application domain. One of the key components is the media access control (MAC) protocol, which has to provide support for multimedia traffic and also for quality-of-service guarantees, if required. The paper provides a comparison of previously proposed protocols, and identifies techniques proposed for supporting multimedia traffic and QoS. A preliminary comparison of the protocols based on simulation data is also presented
